Dorothea Mackellar was said to be inspired by her love of the country, particularly her experiences in the Gunnedah district as a young woman. A bronze, life-sized statue of Dorothea Mackellar, author of 'My Country', is located in Anzac Park, opposite the Visitor Information Centre. A free fact sheet on Dorothea's life and her connection to Gunnedah is available at the centre. A variety of souvenir items, poetry books, and a CD of Dorothea reciting 'My Country' are also available for sale.
The Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society conduct a national poetry competition for school children annually, with entries received from around 1000 schools Australia wide, each year. For more information go to the 'Dorothea' web site.
